Grammar And You Degeneration of the Nations
First off, i'm probably pretty guilty of this, though not to the extremes that some people take it.
The Internet, great place, you can get the info, play the games, and chat the chat. It's great, we associate the net with the ability to quickly gain access to materials and information that would previously have required a sh1t load of research. Unfortunately the whole speed aspect of things has degraded grammar quality, And folks, grammar is key to clarity. Oh how i hate the BRB, the K, The WE, and probably worst of all, the LOL. Whats worse is that kids coming into high school that have grown up with the internet and instant messaging are actually using these abbreviations in their writing. They don't know any different, and hence, beleive that this is the way that things are actually written (its hard to beleive for those of us who have been using the Net and other forms of communication before the advent of instant messaging). Not that these problems aren't solved through English Courses in school, but its just really weird for me to think that some 14 year old kid will actually include these abbreviations in a formal Assignment.
On A somewhat related Note, SENTENCES ARE NOT NICKNAMES. More and more people are using sentences for nicknames on MSN messenger. WTF (<-- i hate myself) is up with that. A nickname is name, something like, 'Bob the Borderliner', 'Nokalocke', or 'Charlie Chuckenstuck'. A nickname is not 'Tommorow i think i'll go to the mall and pick up a new sweater'. Stop it!, You Annoy Me!
Peace Out,
