Twas The Early, Early Morning Of the Day of The Night Before Christmas When Last I Checked
Warning: The following is my opinion, and as such, it is obviously not yours. I encourage discussion about any of the topics that I may present here, but by calling any of my opinions wrong, and trying to prove so, completely defeats the point I'm trying to make. Any e-mail or comments that I happen to receive that try to tell me where to stick things will be posted on this page to expose the authors for the rambling, simple minded idiots that they are (different opinions aren't wrong, but trying to call my opinion bull is).
And Now Our Feature Presentation
Indian in a cow-boy hat, kind of ironic don't you think? I noticed that tonight when i was channel surfing and happened upon the Native American Channel (APTN or something like that). I also noted that Martha Stewart makes a mean fruit cake, as documented by the women's television network (WTN). Somethings going on in some language I have no idea what is on omni 1 and 2. Black history all this month on BET (Black Entertainment Television).
It's great isn't it? We have all of these television channels to celebrate ethnic diversity in Canada. Every channel we have celebrates multiculturalism in some way or another. We can learn about the celebrations of distance lands, and try them out for ourselves. Canada is such a wonderful place to live, a mish-mash of different cultures, not one of them letting another get the best of it, all sharing an equal portion of the spot light.
Oh wait,
Toronto didn't have a christmas tree this year in front of it's city hall. It had, and I quote, a "Holiday Tree". The term "Christmas Tree" was dubbed inappropriate by the city's Holiday commitee (or whoever was in charge of decorations) and instead "Holiday Tree" was used to appeal to a more diverse group of people. Employee's of the Gap aren't allowed to say 'Merry Christmas' to their shoppers, as this may offend people of different ethnic backgrounds. I too find myself stumbling for the right words to use when greeting shoppers at work, lest I utter some satanic phrase that sends the person before me into a firey passion of hate and disgust. The person isn't going to get mad if I say Merry Christmas (unless they're some narrow minded twit who likes to jump on any opportunity they can to make themselves look better then other people [ like those idiot kids who are trying to sue McDonalds because they didn't know fast food would make them fat, gah, shudder ], and in such a case any points made by these people should be taken lightley anyway, seeing as their twits and all).
So what happened to the whole 'celebrate different cultures' thing? Apparently your standard Majority Joe doesn't think he counts. As far as I'm Concerned, my culture is a culture just as deserving as celebration as any other. Yet where other's would demand more accurate presentations of what life is really like where they're from, I'm scrambling to send out 'Holiday Cards' and decorate my 'Holiday Tree', while singing 'Rock Around the Clock' door to door with a group of my close friends. Fun, Festive.
I'm not trying to blame this whole predicament on other cultures, infact, it's really quite the opposite. Somewhere along the lines Majority Joe forgot that he too had a right to celebrate his own beliefs, and instead scrambled around trying to please everyone else but himself. Anyone whose ever tried to do this knows how the story ends. Joe becomes severly depressed, and his stress level goes through the roof as the people he's been trying to please come to expect a level of quality that he simply can't provide.
Majority Joe needs to sit back and take a breather. Realize that yeah, theres people around with different ideas then he has, but that's cool. Joe needs to get back to basics, decorate his "Christmas tree", send out his "Christmas Cards", go caroling with songs like "Jingle Bells" in his song book, and for crap's sake, he needs to wish anyone he can a "Merry Christmas". Sure the Person may be of some other religion, but it's not like your calling the person a "poo poo head", your wishing them good cheer and good times.
