Theory of a Bad Band 91% of people say the answer is A, so therefor the answer must be A
Alas, what has the musical world come to? Music is no longer good, music is popular. Who cares if it sounds good, beats its own path, and is completely original? If it's not by, or doesn't sound like Britney Spears, its not going to make a chart anytime soon. Networks like MTV or MuchMusic don't look at music for what it is, they look at music in the sense of who its from, and how many people are listening to it. Money grubbers that they are, they don't want to risk playing indie artists as this could hurt their ratings. Who cares if the new N'Sync single is just a ripoff of one of their older songs, as soon Much airs the video, you know the damned thing is going to be at #1 before a month has passed.
Just because something is incredibly popular, doesn't mean its good. For instance, everyone in a class of 100 thinks that 2+2=5. They talk amoungst themselves, and come to this general consensus. The class is handed a multiple choice quiz, the question: '2+2= a.) 5 b.) 4 c.)Seaweed d.)Ribbit'. Everyone answers A. Now, if this class were run by MTV or MuchMusic, everyone would be right, but the answer isn't A, its B (surprise).
I imagine many indie artists wouldn't charge royalties for their music either. Even if they did, they probably wouldn't compare to the likes of playing a friggen Nickel Back video.
Stations like MTV and MuchMusic, and many radio stations (though they're not as bad) need to diversify their playlists, lest they continue to sink into commercialized bleh.
